On this page she has provided answers to some of the most common questions she is asked about liposuction.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Wandra Miles welcomes your questions about liposuction. To visit her in Seattle, WA, request your personal consultation or call her office at 206-215-6221. She also serves patients in southern Alaska.

Do you perform ultrasonic liposuction?

In the 1990s and early 2000s, many physicians used ultrasonic liposuction; it was an important technique in its time. Today, it has largely been replaced by power-assisted liposuction (PAL). Dr. Miles often uses PAL, which loosens fat cells with a specialized vibrating cannula, as an enhancement to traditional tumescent liposuction for her patients.

How do I know which type of liposuction to choose?

When you choose an appropriately trained and experienced plastic surgeon, you do not need to choose; your surgeon will determine which technique will provide the most attractive results while maintaining your safety. Considerations include the areas being treated, the amount of fat being removed, and your skin tone.

Will the fat come back if I gain weight after liposuction?

While the fat cells cannot grow back after they are removed with liposuction, fat cells in other areas can become enlarged. An advantage is that weight gain after liposuction is typically distributed more evenly on the body. To keep your contoured look after liposuction, it's important to avoid gaining weight by maintaining a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a sensible diet.

Will there be scars?

Although scars are unavoidable with any plastic surgery procedure, Dr. Miles uses narrow liposuction cannulas that require very small incisions — only a few millimeters long. In addition, she takes special care to place the incisions in areas where the scars will not be noticeable such as in the belly button, within the armpit, or other natural creases of the body.

Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Liposuction can diminish the appearance of cellulite to some degree, but most often it will not remove it.

Having children has taken a toll on my breasts and my body contours. How do I decide which area to take care of first?

You don't have to choose. Many women, both moms and those who have never been pregnant, choose a mommy makeover to get multiple improvements with a single surgery and recovery period. While Dr. Miles typically includes liposuction in this personalized set of procedures, most women also have a tummy tuck and a breast enhancement procedure. She takes care to make sure the surgeries chosen can be safely performed together.

Is there a limit to how much fat can be removed?

Yes, Dr. Miles follows the guidelines issued by professional organizations to ensure your safety. During your consultation, she will help you understand the results you can expect.

What kind of anesthesia is used?

Dr. Miles uses general anesthesia for most liposuction procedures. You will be most comfortable sleeping through the procedure; once you awaken, you'll be on your way home to rest in no time.
